About

Garmi 1.1 represents a new generation of care‑focused research robotics — redesigned to be tested directly in real care environments. Working closely with TUM researchers and scientists, and conducting additional studies with nurses, physicians, care facility leaders, and older adults, we helped the original Garmi evolve from a generic research platform into a socially intuitive companion — one that feels trustworthy, approachable, and professional in the care context.

We focused on communication at eye level, expressive facial cues, and a posture that reduces intimidation. The arms were intentionally reframed as functional tools, stepping back during social interaction. Functionally, Garmi 1.1 adds a height‑adjustable column for extended reach, a larger expressive face, and a second screen for telemedicine. Its modular architecture allows researchers to integrate new or additional sensors, and other experimental modules with ease.

A warm regional identity completes the design: Loden fabric adds tactility, tradition, and human closeness, while refined volumes make the robot more compact and less technical. The result is a research robot that feels less like a machine and more like a supportive presence — ready to be tested in real care settings.
